Located on the edge of the Arctic, Yellowknife is a small frontier town on the shores of the Great Slave Lake, supporting approximately 50% of the province's population (around 20,000 residents). Explore the historic Old Town, where the atmosphere of the bygone gold-rush era remains. Also visit the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, which features historical and cultural displays covering the whole of the Northwest Territories and the Legislative Assembly, as well as an igloo-shaped building where you can view Northern art and learn about the Aboriginal-style government of the region during a free, hour-long tour.
