Sun Temple at Modhera and the Rani Ki Vav Stepwell

| May 15, 2020

The Sun Temple at Modhera lies 100 km from Ahmedabad and dates back to the early 11th century. King Bhimdev built it during the same period that the Jain temples at Mount Abu were constructed. Even in its partially ruined state, the Sun Temple at Modhera is magnificent. The exterior of this temple is intricately carved and the building has been designed so that the sun's rays illuminate the sanctum at dawn at the time of the equinoxes. Patan is noted for its weaving centre and the Rani Ki Vav stepwell. Stepwells were built with a multitude of functions in mind, including providing water and hiding temple valuables. Although commonplace in Gujarat, this is one of the largest and best preserved. Share:
