South of Jakarta lies the town of Bogor, a rapidly growing settlement that is famous for its botanical gardens. Founded in 1817 by the German-born Dutch biologist and botanist Caspar Reinwardt, the gardens were built next to the Istana Bogor (Presidential Palace) on the same site as a man-made 15th-century forest. In 1811 the site was landscaped by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore, before Reinwardt established the gardens in their current form to research and grow seeds and plants suitable for cultivation in Indonesia's plantations. The gardens cover an area of 110 hectares, with a collection of more than 10,000 different species of tropical plants. Share:
