Quito has some of the best-preserved colonial history in Latin America and was declared a Unesco world heritage site in 1978. Its rich cultural heritage, from ancient pre-Columbian origins to the colonial and republican periods, can be seen in the city’s architecture, art, cuisine, and music. Stroll into downtown Quito which was founded by the Spanish upon the ruins of an Incan settlement and then visit the cobblestone street of La Ronda, where the first struggles for independence in South America occurred in the early 1800's.
