The Taman Ayun temple is set in grounds filled with fountains, statues and plants; its name literally means 'beautiful garden'. The temple was founded by a king of the Mengwi empire to symbolise the abode of the gods, Mt Meru. The temple of Tanah Lot, like Taman Ayun, is one of Bali's 'directional temples' designed to protect the islanders from evil. Perched on a cliff high above the beach, the temple is a stunning spot to watch the sunset. Goa Gajah is a ninth-century cave temple adorned with rock carvings of mythical creatures, bathing pools and statues. The nearby Pura Samuan Tiga temple, dating from the Udayana Warmadewa dynasty of the 10th century, has been rebuilt many times over the centuries. It is set in a beautiful location flanked by two rivers, the Pande and Tegending, on the east side and the remains of an ancient pool to the west, with groves of sacred Banyan trees close by.
