The sites around the Sea of Galilee, many of which appear in the bible, hold special significance for Christians around the globe. At Capernaum, the home of Jesus' disciple Peter and centre of Jesus' preaching, visit the remains of the second-century synagogue and the Church of Peter, an impressive building the sits on columns over the remains of several much older buildings. Nearby Tabgha was the site of the 'Feeding of the Five Thousand'. It is marked by the Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes, in which there is a byzantine mosaic depicting the fish and loaves. On a hillside above the lake is the Mount of Beatitudes, where Jesus is said to have delivered the Sermon on the Mount. The Church here offers fine views over the Sea of Galilee on a clear day. At Ginosar, in the local museum there are the remains of an ancient wooden fishing boat, around 2,000 years old. Later, continue to the Golan Heights. After numerous disputes with Syria, this strategic mountain range became a part of current Israel after the 'Six-Day War' in 1967. The area remains disputed today, but views from here over the Galilee area are very impressive.
