An ideal place to gain an overview of the history of the Silla kingdom is at the Gyeongju National Museum, which relates the story of the 1,000 year old Silla culture and displays thousands of artefects from the era. In the foothills of the mountains outside the city the Pulkuksa (or Bulguksa) temple is an extremely elaborate and colourful temple, and represents the apex of the artistry of the Silla Kingdom, with some particularly impressive stonework. The Cheonmachong ancient tomb is one of the few excavated tombs and showcases the method of construction, with a wooden chamber covered with stones and earth to create a large mound. A total of over one thousand artefacts were unearthed from the tomb including weaponry, equestrian equipment and a painting of a flying horse in gold, carved onto the side of a saddle guard. This has given the tomb its name, which means 'heavenly horse tomb'.
