Whether climbing Dunn’s River Falls or exploring the towering Blue mountains, visitors will discover the diversity of the landscapes and learn of Jamaica’s fascinating history. Of course, there are also the features for which Jamaica is perhaps better known, such as the fabulous beaches, water sports, bustling markets and the spicy local favourite, jerk chicken.

Negril

Negril

Negril, located about 50km to the west of Montego Bay, has two distinct areas – the slightly earthy and funky West End, and the more formal and upmarket East End, where the area’s most fashionable resort hotels are situated. Visitors to Negril usually head to Seven Mile Beach, where rainbow coloured placards invite passers-by to stop for a massage, dine at beachfront restaurants or sip a refreshing drink at a seaside bar.

The drive of 80km east from Montego Bay to Ocho Rios may reveal scenes recognisable from the first James Bond film, Dr No. Hardly surprising, as Bond’s creator, Ian Fleming, lived at Goldeneye, just outside Ocho Rios. Aside from the glorious beaches and verdant landscapes, Ocho Rios is most renowned for the spectacular Dunn’s River Falls, where a climb of some 180 metres will take you to the top of one of Jamaica’s national treasures.

Yes, the long swathes of beaches and warm Caribbean Sea may prove alluring, but there are many other activities to while away the time. Jamaica has the best golf courses in the West Indies, the finest of the championship links being at Montego Bay. Bicycle tours are popular, none more so than the Downhill Tour, which provides wonderful views as you freewheel down the Blue Mountains. There are many hikes and trails to take, with Rio Grande Valley offering the seven-hour White River Jaunt, which includes a raft trip across the river.
