British Virgin Islands
The British Virgin Islands - often referring to themselves as 'Nature's Little Secret'- are a cluster of small islands and cays, lying just to the east of San Juan. The emphasis here is on enjoying the unspoilt, undeveloped surroundings, with deserted stretches of beach on which to bask beneath the warm, sun-drenched skies, and the Caribbean sea constantly beckoning those who wish to sail the crystal clear waters or explore the beautiful, protected reefs. Virgin Gorda is perhaps the best known of the islands, with its stylish resort hotels and villas offering true barefoot luxury, and from where a short boat ride will take passengers to Tortola, the largest of the islands, where the capital of Road Town is filled with markets, boutiques and restaurants. Steeped in the history of the British Navy, the islands are ringed by shipwrecks, the most famous of which is the RMS Rhone, now a national marine park.
