Vibrant Indian heritage festival
29 Jun 2015
A vibrant heritage arts festival drew in tourists from all over the world at the weekend.
This year's Elephanta Festival took place on March 2 and 3 before the dramatic backdrop of the Elephanta Caves.
International tourists on tailor-made holidays in the region were able to experience classical dance, sculpture and art as part of a rich variety of events over the course of the two days.
The festival was hosted by Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), whose managing director Dr Jagdish Patil described it as a "truly grand" affair.
Appearances this year from international performers in particular have served to put the festival "on the international tourism map", enthused the MTDC chief.
The likes of Shweta Pandit, Prabhakar Karekar, Elie Afif and Punya Srinivas were on the bill for the Elephanta Festival this time around.
Patil revealed this year's event looked to build on the success of the 2012 festival, which recorded a 10% increase in visits from overseas tourists.
And the tourism chief indicated that organisers are doing their best to fix future dates of the festival in order to make it easier than ever for international visitors to include a visit to the event in their itinerary when planning tailor-made holidays in India.
