Hope springs eternal in Greece
29 Jun 2015
Tourism bosses are promoting the attractions of Greece's thermal springs as part of a drive to increase visitor numbers and revive "spa tourism".
Tourism minister Olga Kefalyianni has relaunched the Committee for the Protection of Therapeutic Natural Resources in a bid to breathe new life into the sector.
The Greek tourism ministry wants "spa tourism" to play a bigger part in developing the tourist industry by helping to attract a wider base of visitors to the country. It hopes to develop the flow of thermal attractions it can promote as destinations for tailor-made luxury holidays.
Several mineral springs have already been identified. They include Loutraki Pozar at Aridaia; Souroti at Thessaloniki; Kallithea on Rhodes; Loutraki-Perichora at Corinth, and Canistra (Kassandra, Chalkidiki).
Following a consultation period, the Greek Government has drawn up a draft law identifying the potential benefits of thermal springs for the country's tourist industry.
