Bali opens royal palaces to public
29 Jun 2015
Bali is opening up a handful of its royal palaces to tourists in a bid to promote the county's culture and traditions.
Travellers will be able to take a turn around the palace, buy fresh produce at a nearby market and learn to rustle up traditional Balinese dishes.
Guests can top off the ultimate in luxury holidays by partaking in a dinner with the Balinese royal family, who will wear their traditional dress and regale visitors with stories and historical background,
Djinaldi Gosana, executive director of the Bali Hotels Association (BHA), the agency behind the idea, said the royal palaces programme was part of plans to develop a community-based tourism in Bali.
Local people will be heavily involved, with artists invited to the palaces to perform for overseas visitors.
Tourists will learn about Balinese local culture and traditions from the royal family's penglingsir - the heads of the family, Mr Gosana told the Bali Daily.
"The royal families should not consider this merely business, but also a way to improve local people's welfare and to preserve Balinese culture and traditions," he added.
