Country Overview

Tunisia travel guide

Overview
In its long and eventful history, Tunisia has been occupied by Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs. Today the country is home to some of North Africa’s most impressive ruins, including eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

What to see

The 12th century Tunis Medina is home to bustling souks and a maze of colourful streets, which contrasts with the modern European feel of the new city. Discover the best of the country’s archaeological sites, including the ancient city of Carthage, steeped in legend, the vast amphitheatre of El Djem, the fascinating underground villas of Bulla Regia and the holy city of Kairouan.

When to go
As with most North African countries, the spring and autumn are the most pleasant times to travel. The south of Tunisia can get very hot in the summer.
