Kyrgyzstan Tailor-Made Holidays

Country Overview

Landscape of Kyrgyzstan

Overview
Kyrgyzstan is nestled away in Central Asia and packed with huge mountains, deep gorges, meandering valleys and azure lakes. The beautiful scenery and Lake Issyk Kul, the world's second largest mountain lake after Lake Titicaca, alongside many rare animal species, such as the snow leopard and red wolf all contribute to the natural splendour of this country.

What to see

LAKE ISSYK KUL
The world's second largest alpine lake, Issyk Kul, is a 'must-see' in Kyrgyzstan. The lake never freezes which contributes to its importance as a stopover for migratory birds. Soak up the lakeside ambience, enjoy the thermal springs and spas, explore the hiking trails or try your hand at catching the local trout.

HORSE TREKS
Horse trekking is one of the best ways to explore Kyrgyzstan and from the locals' perspective. Few places can claim such a fine tradition of horsemanship, or a life so orientated around the horse. Local horsemen will guide you through the lush, flower-filled valleys and over the high mountain passes. Particularly recommended areas to explore on horseback are the foothills of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too, the Issyk-Kul to Kazakhstan trek via Balbay, the route from near Kochkor to Lake Song-Kul and, for more experienced riders, the Tien-Shan and At-Bashy Mountains.

OSH
Osh 'older than Rome' is the country's second largest city with a history dating back to at least the 5th century BC. For those that enjoy a walk and a city view, take the trail up to Solomon's Throne. Or wander round Osh bazaar, 3km to the west, though not very colourful, offers a glimpse of Kyrgyz and Uzbeks from the more conservative south of the republic.

When to go
The best time to visit Kyrgyzstan is between April and June, and then again between September and October.
