Uruguay Tailor-Made Holidays

Country Overview

Colonia del Sacramento

Overview
Colonia offers a nice contrast to the hustle and bustle of Buenos Aires across the River Plate, with its white-washed colonial buildings, tree-lined streets and restaurants overlooking the river.

What to see

Other sites worth seeing include the Market in Montevideo, which is a great place to wander about and enjoy a typical Asado (barbecue). Punta del Este has excellent beaches but a few too many casino-style hotels, and is very popular with Argentinean holidaymakers.

When to go
Since Uruguay’s major attraction is its beaches, the most ideal time to visit is in the summer. Between late April and November it is generally much cooler and there is also the occasional rainfall. July’s average temperature is a chilly 11°C. In the summer temperatures can be very hot by the coast but higher up in the hills it is a lot cooler. (January’s average maximum is between 21°C and 26°C).

Great Experiences

Colonia del Sacramento

Colonia del Sacramento

The cobble stoned streets and sycamore-shaded plazas of Colonia del Sacramento are just a short boat trip away from Buenos Aires in Argentina although a whole world away in terms of peace and tranquility. By day, wonder through the streets and take in the history. By night, watch the sunset over the Río de la Plata in Uruguay’s oldest city, founded by the Portugeuese in 1680.

Estadio Centinario

Estadio Centinario
Visit the stadium where Uruguay won the first football World Cup in 1930. Within the stadium complex you will find the Museo del Futbol which houses artefacts belonging to the legends of the game. For the non-football fan, the stadium also has a tower from which you can take in some fantastic views of the Uruguayan capital.

Mercado del Puerto

Mercado del Puerto

No visit to Uruguay is complete without a visit to Montevideo's old port market, which is located at the foot of Pérez Castellano close to the ciudad vieja (old town). The wrought-iron structure houses an array of market stalls as well as arguably the best bbq steaks in the city. Whilst during the week you will find yourself eating lunch alongside suited businessman, Saturday afternoon is when the the market really comes alive with tourists, musicians and locals alike.

Punta del Este

Punta del Este
With its many beaches, elegant yacht harbor and glitzy restaurants, this is without doubt the most expensive place in Uruguay. Despite suffering a period of decline during the Uruguayan and Argentine recessions, Punta del Este has now reclaimed its mantel as the holiday destination of choice for the well heeled, rich and famous of nearby Argentina and Brazil.

Yerba Mate

Yerba Mate
Join the locals and try some of this much-loved herbal tea. Mate is definitely an acquired taste although you will see the locals clutching flasks of the stuff wherever they go!
