PANAMA CITY
Panama City, one of Latin America's most cosmopolitan urban areas, lies at the intersection between the Americas and is also the terminus of the world-famous canal. The capital is well worth a visit, not only for its huge skyscrapers and impressive shopping malls, but also for its colonial neighbourhoods and crumbling ruins. Due to Panama City's ethnical diversity there are an array of restaurants to suit almost any palette, from sushi to Italian. The district of Casco Viejo, founded in the 17th century, is Panama's most historic neighbourhood. It is colourful, colonial and vibrant - a great place to stop for a bite to eat or to try your hand at some salsa.
THE PANAMA CANAL
The Panama Canal was first opened in 1914 after 10 years of construction and the involvement of over 75,000 labourers. It is undoubtedly one of the world's most superb feats of engineering. A trip to the Miraflores Locks Visitor Centre allows one to see the transiting vessels first-hand. Alternatively, take a boat trip along the 80km Canal to observe the beautiful scenery, captivating engineering and abundance of wildlife.
BIRDWATCHING
Panama is considered one of the best places in the world for birdwatching, with around 950 different species. Recommended spots for birdwatching are the Soberanía National Park, or for the chance to spot the quetzal (the endangered national bird of Guatemala) go to the Chiriquí Province. The quetzel is most likely to be sited between November and April.
