Honduras is placed in the heart of Central America, sharing borders with Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador. Tropical beaches can be found along Honduras' caribbean coast, whilst mountains populate the interior.
The lush rainforests, white sandy caribbean beaches and ancient Mayan ruins of Copan, along with the many rivers and waterfalls of the Pico Bonito National park are just a few of the many attractions Honduras has on offer.
The ancient Mayan ruins of Copán, designated a world UNESCO site in 1980, are nestled away in western Honduras. Discovered in 1570 by Diego García de Palacio, the city had been lying dormant since it was abandoned in the early 10th century, but it was not until the 1930s that the city was finally excavated. Among the best of the ruins are the imposing Acropolis consisting of temples, courts, the Great Plaza, an impressive amphitheatre and the Hieroglyphic Stairway.
The exotic archipelago of the Bay Islands can be found 50km from the caribbean coast of Honduras. The main islands being Guanaja, Roatan and Utila, plus a number of smaller islands. Long stretches of white sandy beach are perfect for those wanting to relax, whilst the coral reef surrounding the islands provide a vibrant underwater world excellent for snorkelling.
