Country Overview

Kaieteur Falls National Park, Guyana

Overview
Guyana lies in the northeast of South America, bordered by Venezuela to the west, Surinam to the southeast and Brazil to the south. It may be the smallest country on mainland South America, but it has its very own splendid array of rainforests, beaches, rivers and savannah that draw the more adventurous of travellers. In the native language of the indigenous people, Guyana means 'country of many waters', which is very suitable considering the entire country is laced with criss-crossing rivers.

What to see

Visit the world's largest single-drop cascade, the Kaietuer Falls, where the 400-foot wide Potaro River plunges 741-feet down from the Pakaraima Plateau. Swifts are known to nest under the falls' overhang and at dusk each night you can see them darting in and out of the falls.

Alternatively, Guyana's capital Georgetown will charm you with its colonial architecture, broad tree-lined avenues and many traditional restaurants. What is more you can also see St. George's Cathedral, which is reputedly the tallest free-standing wooden building in the world.

When to go
Most visitors to Guyana will want to see some of the many waterfalls and the best time to see these is at the end of the rainy seasons. There are two wet seasons during May and June, and December and January. However, as Guyana is an equatorial country it is consistently hot and pleasant.
