The capital La Paz has a dramatic setting in a bowl surrounded by the high mountains of the altiplano. This fascinating city has a number of impressive colonial buildings, and at 4000 metres above sea level, is the highest capital in the world. Just walking uphill can make you feel out of breath here. La Paz is excellent for shopping, with a number of stalls selling typical Andean handicrafts and weavings as well as the fascinating witches market, where they sell all manner of strange potions such as dried llama foetuses.
The ancient silver-mining town of Potosi, the highest city in the world, is worth visiting for its interesting silver mining museum, and it also has a number of beautiful colonial churches and cathedrals. The town of Sucre is considered by many Bolivianos to be the most beautiful city, with its whitewashed colonial buildings and relaxed atmosphere.
The Salar de Uyuni is the world's highest salt flats, an otherworldly place with a unique atmosphere and stunning scenery.
Lake Titicaca is one of the most naturally beautiful paces in South America. The lake is so high that it seems to shimmer like ice and reflect the beautiful snow-capped peaks of the Andes which surround it. It is worth spending a night on the Isla del Sol to fully appreciate this area's magical qualities, supposedly the birthplace of the Inca sun god.
Bolivia also features a large part of the Amazon in the north, and a good place to stay is Chalalan Lodge in Madidi National Park, where you can do jungle walks, canoe trips, and look for jaguar and monkey as well as birdlife.
