Bolivia Tailor-Made Holidays

Country Overview

Lake Titicaca

Overview

From the high altiplano of the north, to the vast salt flats and strange desert landscapes in the south and tropical jungle in the east, Bolivia is a land of diversity. There is a very strong presence of indigenous communities and even in the capital of La Paz ladies go about their daily business in traditional dress and distinctive black bowler hats. Over half the population are from Quechua, Aymara and other indigenous ethnic groups. The country is still very much developing its tourist infrastructure and although the stunning scenery and hospitable people make any trip so worthwhile, the accommodation outside of main cities should be considered basic.

What to see

The capital La Paz has a dramatic setting in a bowl surrounded by the high mountains of the altiplano. This fascinating city has a number of impressive colonial buildings, and at 4000 metres above sea level, is the highest capital in the world. Just walking uphill can make you feel out of breath here. La Paz is excellent for shopping, with a number of stalls selling typical Andean handicrafts and weavings as well as the fascinating witches market, where they sell all manner of strange potions such as dried llama foetuses.

When to go
In the summer which is from November to April the rainy season occurs, this is when overland transportation becomes difficult if not impossible in some areas. The best and most comfortable time for exploring the whole country is during winter from May to October with its dry, clear days.
