Verona Carnival, Italy
Verona's spectacular carnival has its roots in the a terrible plague that struck the city in the seventeenth century. In 1660 a local nobleman celebrated the end of this deathly period by offering the people of Verona plates of gnocchi. Carnival now consists of a grand parade of masks, a historical Regatta on the river Adige and of course the distribution of gnocchi.
