Sustainable Tourism: Far East
Please see below a list of charities we recommend in the Far East, including contact details and how to donate.
Civic Force, Japan
Civic Force was created in response to the Niigata Earthquake crisis of 2004. Its aim is to provide swift and effective emergency services in the event of large-scale crises in Japan as well as long term assistance. Currently the charity is working hard to provide relief and assistance to those affected by the massive earthquake and tsunami of March 2011. Due to the scale of this event, this work will continue for many years. Civic Force works with government agencies, NGOs, and businesses to ensure communication and information sharing among partners.

Animals Asia Foundation, China
The Animals Asia Foundation is an animal welfare charity based in Hong Kong, working in partnership with the Chinese Government to put an end to the bear farms which see over 7000 ‘Moon Bears’ incarcerated in small cages and milked daily, through open holes in their abdomen, for their bile which is used in Chinese medicine. In July 2000 Animals Asia signed a landmark agreement with the Chinese authorities to rescue 500 suffering and endangered Moon Bears from the worst bile farms in Sichuan province and work towards ending the barbaric practice of bear farming. Today, the China Bear Rescue has seen freedom for over 138 previously farmed Moon Bears at the Sanctuary in Chengdu, China, and the Sanctuary are pioneering an education programme across China to demonstrate why bear farming is cruel.

David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation
David Shepherd is known internationally as an artist and ambassador for wildlife. In 1960 he become a conservationist overnight when he came across 255 zebra lying dead around a poisoned waterhole in Tanzania. Since then, with the help of supporters across the world, the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) has given away over £4million in grants to save critically endangered mammals in their wild habitat and benefit the local people who share their environment. Donations can be made via the foundation to specific projects.
The International Snow Leopard Trust was set up to research and save these animals from the brink of extinction whilst developing management plans for their future conservation. Today, Snow Leopard Enterprises is the Trust’s flagship programme. Over 400 herders make wool products to increase their income. All of these families have agreed to stop hunting snow leopards and their prey, and are helping the Trust curb outside poaching. In addition to this community-based conservation, the Trust is involved in groundbreaking snow leopard research. Concurrently, Trust staff monitor wild sheep and goat populations, and conduct community surveys to better understand the social and cultural perspectives of local communities.

Bokor National Park Project, Cambodia
Despite years of war in the 'Killing Fields' of Cambodia, the country still holds some of the most extensive and non-fragmented stretches of forest in Asia, providing vital habitat for remaining populations of many wild animals, including tigers. This successful programme has not only trained and equipped teams of anti-poaching patrols, but it works with over 40 villages surrounding the park on community outreach programmes, introducing them to alternative income generation schemes. In addition, it provides fuel efficient stoves, plant nurseries and offers employment to ex-poachers and has resulted in Bokor becoming one of the best protected parks in Cambodia.
