Despite Taiwan's government recently introducing a campaign to promote the country as one of the finest tourist destinations in Asia, the country remains something of an undiscovered gem. In 2007 National Geographic claimed Taiwan could be "Asia's best kept secret", and in March 2009 the New York Times referred to Taipei as "of the most underrated tourist destinations in Asia”.

What to see

Taiwan offers a tremendous diversity for a small island. From cosmopolitan cities to stunning landscapes, Taiwan also has a fascinating history. The capital, Taipei, is home to an unparalleled collection of Chinese art outside China, much of it being shipped to Taiwan to escape the ravages of the cultural revolution.

Beaches of Kenting
This relaxed area offers beaches to rival Thailand and is a great place to unwind.

Fo Guang Shan Monastery

Visit one of the largest Buddhist monasteries in Southeast Asia, where you can observe the lives of the monks and nuns and participate in evening prayers.

Taroko Gorge
The gorge itself is a gaping rift in the mountains, with sheer cliffs rising up from the river beds. This is a great area for walkers, offering a number of superb trails.

The Lalu, Sun Moon Lake
The Lalu on Sun Moon Lake was once the holiday retreat of Chiang Kai-shek, and is an experience on its own, never mind the setting overlooking the beautiful lake.
