China’s Silk Road Explorer

The Silk Road evokes images of camel caravans journeying across deserts and mountains between the exotic cities of the East and Arabia, Persia and Rome. This journey traces one of these routes, from the Tang Dynasty capital of Xian, past the western extremities of the Great Wall to oasis towns in the Gobi Desert and finally Kashgar in the far west.


Day 1 – To Beijing: Overnight flight from London to Beijing with British Airways. (N)

Day 2 – Beijing: Arrive and transfer to the Novotel Peace Hotel for 3 nights. (N)

Day 3 – Old Beijing: Visit the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, and the hutong district. (B, L)

Day 4 – Great Wall: Full-day tour to the Great Wall at Jinshanling Pass. (B, L)

Day 5 – To Xian: Visit the Imperial Summer Palace, then fly to Xian located at the beginning of the Silk Road, and visit the Muslim quarter and Grand Mosque. (B)

Day 6 – Terracotta Warriors: Visit the Terracotta Warriors and Shaanxi History Museum. (B, L)

Day 7 – To Dunhuang: Fly to Dunhuang, an oasis town in the Gobi, and stay at the Dunhuang Hotel. (B)

Day 8 – To Turpan: Full-day visit to Singing Sand Hill, Crescent Moon Lake and Mogao caves. Overnight train to Turpan. (B)

Day 9 – Turpan: Tour Emin Minaret and ancient Gaochang. Visit Tuyaq valley and the Flaming mountains. Evening Uygur performance. (B, D)

Day 10 – To Urumqi: Morning tour of the Jiaohe ruins. Afternoon drive to Urumqi and stay at Sheraton Urumqi Hotel for 2 nights. (B, L)

Day 11 – Urumqi: Excursion to Heavenly Lake, then visit a Kazakh family on Nanshan Pasture. (B, L)

Day 12 – To Kashgar: Morning visit to Tartar Mosque, Southern Mosque and Xinjiang Museum, then fly to Kashgar. (B, D)

Day 13 – Kashgar: Visit the Sunday bazaar and Kashgar’s old town. (B)

Day 14 – Karakul Lake: Hike round Karakul Lake and meet local Uygur families. (B, L)

Day 15 – To Beijing: Fly to Beijing and overnight at the Langham Place Hotel. (B)

Day 16 – To London: Fly to London. (B)
