Burma (Myanmar) is a culturally rich land with a long history that is relatively untouched by tourism. This journey discovers the highlights of this diverse country, beginning with the majestic Shwedagon Pagoda in Rangoon (Yangon). The Burmese people’s deep-rooted belief in Buddhism and spirit worship is reflected in the thousands of pagodas in ancient Pagan (Bagan) and monasteries of Mandalay. The tour finishes at the beautiful Inle Lake, famous for its floating villages and gardens, and the leg-rowers of the Intha tribe.

Day 1 – To Rangoon: Fly from London to Rangoon, via Bangkok, with Thai Airways. (N)

Day 2 – Rangoon: Arrive in Rangoon, the former capital of Burma, and transfer to the Governor’s Residence for 2 nights. (N)

Day 3 – Rangoon: Morning excursion to Shwedagon Pagoda, Chaukhtatgyi Reclining Buddha and Kandawgyi Lake. End the morning with a visit to a meditation centre and learn about meditation methods from a monk. Afternoon visit to Bogyoke Aung San (Scott) market, followed by a colonial walk from Sule Pagoda to the Rangoon riverfront. At the end of the day, enjoy high tea at the Governor’s Residence hotel. Day 4 – To Mandalay: Early morning flight to Mandalay. On arrival, take a tour of Amarapura, including Mahamuni Pagoda and the iconic U Bein Bridge. Afternoon tour of Mandalay and see the sunset at Mandalay Hill. In the evening, there is a dinner and cultural show. Stay 2 nights at Mandalay Hill Resort (or similar). Optional visit to a night market is included. (B, L, D)

Day 5 – Maymyo: Full-day trip to Maymyo (Pyin Oo Lwin), a former British hill station. Visit the local market, nearby plantations and villages. Take a horse-drawn cart to see grand colonial houses and visit National Kandawgyi Gardens. If there is time, make a visit to a local winery. (B, L)

Day 6 – To Pagan: Today, visit the ancient royal capital of Inwa by horse-drawn cart and Sagaing Hill. In the afternoon, fly to Nyaung U and transfer to the Thiripyitsaya Sanctuary Resort for 3 nights. (B, L)

Day 7 – Pagan: Optional sunrise balloon ride over Pagan (October to March only). Full-day tour of Pagan. Highlights include Pagan market, Ananda, Dhammayangyi, Htilominlo temples and local villages. View the sunset from a quiet location and, in the evening, enjoy a puppet show with dinner. (B, D)

Day 8 – Pagan: Full-day tour of Pagan, including Shwezigon Pagoda, Hgnet Pyit Taung, and Lawkananda and Dhammayazika temples. End the day with a sunset cruise on the Irrawaddy river with cocktails. (B, L)

Day 9 – To Inle Lake: Morning flight to Heho and transfer to Inle Lake with excursions en route. In the afternoon, take a tour of the floating villages, gardens and temples around Inle Lake. Stay 2 nights at Inle Princess Resort. (B, L)

Day 10 – Inle Lake: Morning excursion to the pagodas of Indein village. Visit a local Intha family’s restaurant for lunch and a cooking demonstration. Afternoon at leisure with possibilities of exploring markets or participating in local festivities. (B, L)

Day 11 – To Rangoon: This morning, fly to Rangoon and visit Kalaywatawya monastery and the National Museum. Farewell dinner at Le Planteur. Stay overnight at the Chatrium (or similar). (B, L, D)

Day 12 – To London: Afternoon transfer to the airport and fly back to London via Bangkok. (B)

Day 13 – London: Morning arrival. (N)

Domestic flights: Due to a restricted domestic flight schedule in Burma, the journey involves a number of early morning flights and requires check-in at least one hour prior to departure.
