Burma: Golden Temples & Pagodas

Burma (Myanmar) has a rich and colourful cultural history, shaped by many influences. The highlights of this tour include the majestic Shwedagon Pagoda, the river cruise from Mandalay to Mingun, the ancient treasure house of Pagan (Bagan) with its thousands of pagodas, mystical Mount Popa and the floating villages of Inle Lake.

Day 1 – To Rangoon (Yangon): Fly from London to Rangoon, via Kuala Lumpur, with Malaysian Airlines. (N)

Day 2 – Rangoon: Arrive in Rangoon, the former capital of Burma, and transfer to the Chatrium for 2 nights. Remainder of the day at leisure. Evening welcome dinner. (D)

Day 3 – Rangoon: Morning excursion to see the Kyauktatgyi Reclining Buddha, Kandawgyi Lake and Kalaywa Tawya Monastery to observe monastic life. Afternoon visit to Bogyoke Aung San (Scott) market followed by a colonial walk from Sule Pagoda and a rickshaw ride along Strand Road to the Rangoon riverfront. Continue to the Governor’s Residence for high tea and end the tour at Shwedagon Pagoda. (B, L)

Day 4 – To Mandalay: Early morning flight to Mandalay. On arrival, take a tour of Amarapura, followed by a visit to Mandalay’s Performing Arts School. Afternoon tour of Mandalay and see the sunset at Mandalay Hill. In the evening, there is a dinner and cultural show. Stay 2 nights at the Mandalay Hill Resort. (B, L, D)

Day 5 – Mingun: Enjoy a river cruise from Mandalay to Mingun. Mingun is home to the world’s largest uncracked bell and is reached by an unhurried boat journey along the Irrawaddy river. (B, L)

Day 6 – To Pagan (Bagan): Visit U Bein Bridge at Inwa by horse cart and Sagaing Hill. Fly to Nyaung U and transfer to the Bagan Thande Hotel for 4 nights. (B, L)

Day 7 – Pagan: Full-day tour of Pagan, including the Ananda Temple and local villages. Evening puppet show with dinner. (B, D)

Day 8 – Pagan: Another full-day tour of Pagan and its temples, including Shwezigon Pagoda. The beautiful golden pagoda is said by the Burmese to contain Buddha’s frontlet bone, collar bone and tooth. Continue to the Pagan Museum, where a special lecture by the former director general of the Ministry of Culture has been arranged. (B, L)

Day 9 – Mount Popa: Full-day tour to Mount Popa. About an hour away from Pagan, Mount Popa is a forest-clad landmark, rising more than 1,500 metres above sea level. Pilgrims have been visiting the shrine here for more than 700 years, climbing 777 winding steps to pay their respects to carved . gures depicting ancient gods. (B, L)

Day 10 – To Inle Lake: Morning flight to Heho and transfer to Inle Lake with excursions en route. In the afternoon, take a tour of the floating villages, gardens and temples around Inle Lake. Stay 2 nights at Inle Resort. (B, L)

Day 11 – Inle Lake: Morning visit to Nampan market. Continue to a local Intha family’s restaurant for a cooking demonstration and lunch. Afternoon excursion to the pagodas of Indein village. (B, L)

Day 12 – To Rangoon: This morning, fly to Rangoon and visit the National Museum where a private visit with the museum’s curator has been arranged. Farewell dinner at Le Planteur. Stay overnight at the Chatrium. (B, D)

Day 13 – To London: Transfer to the airport and fly to London via Kuala Lumpur with Malaysian Airlines. (B)

Day 14 – London: Morning arrival. (N)

Flights: Due to a restricted domestic flight schedule in Burma, the journey involves a number of early morning flights that require check-in at least one hour prior to departure.
