The magnificent ninth-century Hindu temples of Prambanan are thought to have been built when the Hindu Sañjaya dynasty returned to power. There is much to explore here, including the Roro Jongrang temple, well known in Javanese popular legend and currently used as an open-air theatre. A Ramayana ballet is performed here annually, during the full moon season typically between May and October. Candi Plaosan is a Buddhist temple complex covering 2,000 sq metres, surrounded by rice paddies and banana plantations. There are two main temples, Plaosan Lor and Plaosan Kidul, and many other smaller shrines, statues and stupas to explore.
