The Keraton, or Sultan's Palace, is actually a walled city built in the 18th century. This huge complex contains various pavilions, museums, residential buildings, towers, gardens and a mosque. The nearby Sonobudoyo museum displays an excellent collection of traditional Javanese art, masks and carvings. Yogyakarta has been a centre for the craft industry since the 1930s, and it is possible to visit batik textile studios and the Kota Gede silver works to see modern production of these crafts.
