The Sasak people number almost three million, and are the majority ethnic group on Lombok. The Sasak are related to the Balinese in language and race, but are predominantly Muslim rather than Hindu. They maintain much of their traditional culture, and a visit to their villages is an edifying experience. Banyumulek village is known for its pottery making, whilst in the village of Sukarare, traditional songket cloth is handwoven on simple looms, intertwined with gold and silver thread. Rambitan is a typical Sasak village with bamboo houses and stilted rice storage barns known as 'lumbung'.
