The central highlands around Ubud in Bali are an area of tropical rainforest, steep valleys, volcanoes and crater lakes. At the southern end of Lake Bratan, the village of Candikuning has an interesting traditional market with fruit, vegetables and Balinese spices on display. Walk through the paddies, intricate terraces and irrigation systems at Jatiluwih, a wonderful example of rice cultivation and a Unesco-listed area. Towering over the terraced fields is Gunung Batukau, Bali's second highest mountain. Located at the foot of its forested slopes is the Pura Luhur Batukau temple, one of the most sacred on the island.
