Focusing on the cultural and heritage highlights of Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Turkey, travel on the Danube Express train and view the region’s most important attractions include Veliko Turnovo, Bran Castle, Sighisoara and Istanbul.

Travel in comfort aboard the Danube Express train, which offers 8 sleeping cars and a maximum of 42 passengers. There are two categories of cabins; Deluxe and Classic.

2012 Itinerary & Prices

Day 1 – To Budapest: Fly from London Heathrow to Budapest with British Airways. Transfer to the Corinthia Hotel Budapest for 2 nights. (N)

Day 2 – Budapest: Half-day tour of Budapest including St Stephen’s Basilica, the Parliament building, City Park, Heroes’ Square, Castle Hill, the Fisherman’s Bastion, Matthias Church and the Royal Palace. Afternoon at leisure. (B)

Day 3 – To Kecskemet: Late morning transfer to the station and board the Danube Express for the 3-night journey to Istanbul. Travel through the northern plains region, stopping en route at the Hungarian towns of Lajosmizse for a Puszta horse show and Kecskemet. (B, L, D)

Day 4 – Sighisoara & Brasov: Morning tour of the Unesco world heritage town of Sighisoara, a beautifully preserved medieval town in Transylvania. The city walls encircle cobbled streets lined with 16th-century colourful burgher houses. Visits include the citadel, Church on the Hill and the Clock Tower. In the afternoon, visit ‘Dracula’s Castle’ in Bran. (B, L, D)

Day 5 – Veliko Turnovo & Kazanlak: Morning walking tour of Veliko Turnovo, including the medieval citadel of Tsaravets. Afternoon tour of a fourth-century Thracian tomb at Kazanlak, the Shipka Memorial church and a rose oil perfumer. (B, L, D)

Day 6 – To Istanbul: Morning arrival and transfer to the Pera Palace Hotel for 2 nights. Full-day tour of Istanbul, including Agia Sofia, the Blue Mosque, Hippodrome, Grand Bazaar and Topkapi Palace. (B)

Day 7 – Istanbul: At leisure or optional tours. (B)

Day 8 – To London: Morning at leisure. Early afternoon transfer to the airport and fly to London with British Airways. (B)
