Overview
Ukraine is one of the least discovered parts of old-world eastern Europe and it is full of wonders: Gothic, Byzantine and Baroque architecture and art - reminders of its many foreign overlords exquisite mosaics miles of gently rolling steppe, hidden monasteries and picturesque mountain villages.

What to see

Stay in the elegant capital Kiev, visit the peninsula of Crimea, where the country’s history is brought to life by legacies of fallen empires that once laid claim to this area, such as Byzantine cave cities, Greek ruins, Russian and Tartar palaces, Genoese castles and Soviet battleships.

When to go
Whilst winters are cold in Ukraine, and spells of extremely cold weather occur when easterly winds blow from Siberia, the winter is shorter than in the neighbouring areas of northern and central European Russia, and the spring thaw comes earlier. The Crimean peninsula has mild winters and a sunny summer climate, although rain falls all year round.

Kiev Pecherskaya Lavra
Visit the 11th Century UNESCO site of Kiev Pecherskaya Lavra, an enormous ensemble which has come to represent the spiritual heart of the country.

Livadia Palace
This white renaissance mansion in Yalta overlooks the Black Sea , and is where Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt discussed the fate of the Axis Powers and post war Europe.

Odessa
Climb the Potemkin stairs in Odessa which were made famous by Sergei Eisenstein in his film, The Battleship Potemkin

Stay in the UNESCO World heritage city of Lviv. Located in the west of the Ukraine, it has host of medieval market squares and is rich in architecture.
