Bratislava, Slovakia's capital city, sits on the banks of the beautiful and meandering Danube. Its history dates back to 907 and includes a long spell as the capital of Hungary from 1563 to 1841.
Climb up to Bratislava castle, from here you can compare the old-town architecture with the communist-era New bridge and Petržalka. Or take a cruise along the Danube from Bratislava to the clifftop ruins of Devín Castle. It could be said that Bratislava has as much charm, but fewer visitors than neighbouring Prague.
