Country Overview

Brandenburg Gate, Berlin

Overview
Germany is a country of contrasts, from modern cities and ancient forests to windswept coastlines and alpine mountains. Regional differences are evident in the architecture, culture and cuisine, making it an exciting destination to explore.

What to see

Follow the route of the River Rhine to see the three towns of Cologne, Dusseldorf and Heidelberg or take the ‘romantic route’ to see the best of Bavaria, travelling through picturesque scenery and taking in the cultural heritage of Munich and Nuremberg. In the Saxony region, visit the cities of Potsdam, Leipzig and Dresden and see some magnificent cultural monuments such as the Zwinger and the Sanssouci Palace.

Berlin's history has been central to the modern history of Europe and it remains a hugely influential and vibrant city. The city, which had been split in two since the Second World War, was reunited when the Berlin Wall came down in 1989 and it now buzzes with an exciting nightlife, superb dining options and an array of fascinating historical buildings. Famed as a centre of the arts, Berlin has over 170 museums, including the Pergamon museum, which is rich in classical antiquity, and the Schloss Charlottenburg, the former summer residence of Queen Sophie Charlotte. More recent additions included Lord Foster's transformation of the Reichstag parliamentary building.

When to go
The best time to visit Germany weather-wise is from May to late October. Autumn and Spring are also pleasant times to visit.
