Overview
Bulgaria is located in Eastern Europe and borders five other countries - Romania, Serbia, the Republic of Macedonia, Greece and Turkey. The Balkan Mountains stretch across the country providing beautiful and rugged scenery, the Black Sea Coast offers mile upon mile of long, sandy beaches, whilst the many ancient cities have UNESCO-listed attractions. Bulgaria's largest settlement and capital city is Sofia.


What to see

The capital city of Sofia is a great first stop, here you can see the Church of St George, considered to be the oldest building in the city and St Nedelya, which has recently been restored as the cathedral for the Bishop of Sofia. Then there is the impressive 16th century Troyan Monastery, which includes the icon of the Three-Handed Virgin, one of the holiest icons for the Orthodoxy in Bulgaria.

When to go
Bulgaria has a temperate climate with cold, wet winters and hot, dry summers. The spring, particularly April to June, is a good time to visit and then again in October.

The Capital of Bulgaria, Sofia has a unique mixture of Classical European architecture combined with Soviet-type design. The multi-domed Alexander Nevski Cathedral is the largest church in the Balkans region and the smaller Boyana Church has ornate frescoes dating back to the 13th century.

Rila Monastery

The most popular tourist centre within the country Rila Monastery is inscribed to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Monastery is based around an inner-arcaded courtyard with the Nativity of the Virgin Church with its exterior frescoes and elaborate iconostasis being the centrepiece of any visit.

Plovdiv

Plovdiv
One of Eastern Europe’s hidden gems the town of Plovdiv is one of the oldest cities in Europe. Explore its rich Roman history by visiting the Antique Theatre and the Roman Stadium.

Neesebar

Neesebar
Located on the Black Sea coast, this busy commercial centre has it origins dating back over 3,000 years. There are still remnants of Roman, Greek, Byzantine and Ottoman ruins and fortifications to be viewed in the city and along the coast.
