Overview
Belgium is located in the heart of Europe, sharing borders with the Netherlands, France, Germany, Luxembourg and the North Sea. The kingdom is split between the Dutch-speaking Flemish region in the north and the largely French-speaking Walloon region in the south. It is a country ideal for city breaks with 5 airports, over 400 types of beer, impressive architecture and not to forget the famously delicious belgian chocolate.

What to see

To see some of Belgium's best medieval architecture it is certainly worth heading to Bruges, where attractions include the Groening and Choco-Story Museums. Here, you will also find street after street of charming Flemish buildings, pretty restaurants and bars, imposing historic monuments, as well as some wonderful Christmas markets during the festive period.

Antwerp
Buy a diamond ring. The world centre for the diamond industry, this attractive town is the perfect place to buy an engagement or wedding ring or even just a birthday present.

Brussels
Enjoy a coffee in the Grand Place and view the magnificent baroque houses lining the square. Called "a true miracle" by Victor Hugo, it is one of the most outstanding architectural ensembles in Europe.

Buy lace in Ghent
Visitors are attracted to the lace souvenirs, such as table cloths, in East Flanders' capital of Ghent.

Bruges' Christmas Market
Visit the "Venice of the North", otherwise known as Bruges - a classical medieval town featuring Gothic churches and cobbled streets, the perfect setting for the annual Christmas Market.

Explore the battlefield of Waterloo
Fought on the 18th June 1815, the Battle of Waterloo was one of the defining moments of European history. Visit the farm houses of La Haye Sante and Hougoumont, where Lieutenant Colonel James MacDonnell of the Coldstream Guards famously closed the farm gates on the French troops.
