Spain: Pilgrim's Road to Santiago

27 October - 03 November 2013 •
8 Days / 7 Nights from £1595
Santiago de Compostela has been one of the most visited shrines in Christendom since the Bishop of Iria was said to have discovered a relic containing the bones of the Apostle James. During the 12th century, four major pilgrimage roads crossed France before converging to form the single Camino Francés (‘French Way’) through northern Spain to Santiago. This was the moment when the art of monumental sculpture was reborn; as churches sought the attentions of pilgrims through richly sculpted doorways, strange and often grotesque corbel and capital sculptures, and spectacular saints’ shrines. Our tour visits many of the key sites along the Camino, exploring the wonders of Spanish Romanesque art and architecture. The tour culminates in Santiago, with its magnificent cathedral and museums, and a chance to explore the environs of the great city.
