Barcelona: Gaudi's Masterworks

20 - 24 November 2013
5 Days / 4 Nights from £1095
This in depth Focus Tour concentrates on the history, technical innovations and influence of Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926), one of the world’s most celebrated architects, and a central figurehead of Catalan Modernism. Travel across the vibrant city of Barcelona, seeing how Gaudi and his contemporaries shaped its landscape, noticing in particular their extraordinary contrast in styles. Gaudi transcended mainstream modernism by referencing nature, religion and Catalonian nationalism in a wholly organic style that drew on new techniques in the treatment of materials and their structural role. Gaudi rarely drew detailed plans for his works, preferring to create them as three-dimensional scale models, which he modified as he went along. This extraordinary approach, inconceivable among present-day architects, resulted in works that anticipated and influenced modern construction methods and uniquely captured the artistic and cultural sentiments of his time.
  • Follow the Modernisme Route, visiting Antoni Gaudi’s most inspirational works
  • Visit Barcelona’s magnificent concert hall, the Palau de la Musica Catalana
  • Explore the National Museum of Catalan Art, which houses modernist art
