Slovenia Holidays

The independent republic of Slovenia (Slovenija) is situated on the right hand shoulder of Italy at the northern end of the Adriatic Sea and has borders with Austria, Hungary and Croatia. A tiny country, about half the size of Switzerland, it has a population of just over 2 million people. The country was the first to achieve independence in 1991 from Tito’s Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, remaining largely untouched by the ensuing fighting as the rest of the republic disintegrated. Historically the most affluent of the Yugoslav countries, Slovenia has grasped its new independence, joining the EU in 2004 and the Eurozone in January 2007. Dubbed variously by many as ‘Europe in miniature’, ‘the sunny side of the alps’ and ‘the green piece of Europe’, the country offers stunning natural scenery coupled with neo-classical architectural gems, castles and historic villages all contained within its compact borders. In Slovenia, the saying goes, you can ski in the morning and enjoy a swim in the sea around the Venetian city of Piran in the afternoon.
