Bay of Naples: Pompeii & Herculaneum

The Bay of Naples was once ringed with flourishing towns and luxury villas, and was one of the greatest centres of classical Roman civilisation. The excavated remains of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Villa Oplontis, destroyed in a day in 79AD, provide a special glimpse into that lost world. Other highlights include Pozzuoli amphitheatre, the thermal springs at Baia, Sibyl’s Cave at Cuma, the Greek temples of Paestum, and the treasures of the Naples Museum. A full day will be spent touring the stunning Amal. coast with its quaint hilltop villages, extravagant Roman villas and carefully tended landscaped gardens.

Day 1 – To Vico Equense: Fly from London Gatwick to Naples with British Airways. Transfer to Vico Equense and stay at the Hotel Aequa for 6 nights. (D)

Day 2 – Paestum: Full-day visit to Paestum, one of Italy’s most majestic sites, to see the magnificent Doric temples of Ceres, Hera and Neptune. Visit the museum and the recently discovered Greek tomb paintings. (B)

Day 3 – Oplontis & Pompeii: Morning visit to the excavated luxury imperial villa at Oplontis, thought to be the home of Emperor Nero’s second wife. Continue to the extensive ruins of Pompeii, the Roman city buried under ash during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD. Visit the archaeological park, where the fascinating sights include the basilica, the forum and the amphitheatre. Return to Naples via the excellently preserved Villa of Mysteries whose controversial frescoes are thought to depict a secret Dionysus cult. (B)

Day 4 – Phlegrean Fields: Full-day tour to the little known, but exciting area of Phlegrean Fields, known as the ‘burning . elds’ due to their volcanic nature. First, visit Cumae, the first Greek settlement on mainland Italy and home to the cave of Sibyl as described in Virgil’s Aeneid. Continue to the nearby Baia Archaeological Park with its Roman thermal spa and museum before finishing at Pozzuoli with its volcanic crater of Solfatara and Flavian amphitheatre. (B, D)

Day 5 – Naples & Herculaneum: This morning, visit the Naples archaeological museum, one of the finest in the world, with its collection of sculptures, mosaics, frescoes and artifacts from the excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum. Afternoon visit to the ruins of Herculaneum, which are not as extensive as Pompeii’s, but are better preserved. (B)

Day 6 – Amalfi & Ravello: Morning drive along the coast to the beautiful town of Amalfi to visit the Romanesque cathedral of St Andrew. Continue to the hilltop village of Ravello with its spectacular views, quiet lanes and beautiful gardens. Afternoon visits to Villa Rufolo with an optional walk to Villa Cimbrone, both of which feature exquisite gardens and spectacular coastal views. (B, D)

Day 7 – To London: Morning at leisure. Afternoon transfer to the airport and fly to London Gatwick with British Airways. (B)
