Rome: Caravaggio & Bernini's High Baroque

06 - 10 November 2013 •
5 Days / 4 Nights from £1395
The works of Caravaggio and Bernini represent two of the most important and influential strands of artistic culture of the baroque period in Rome. The radical naturalism of Caravaggio, whether in religious or genre painting, brought about an extraordinary upheaval among both the public and the artistic community. Bernini’s sculpture and architecture - a combination of dynamic gestures, emotional, sensual drama, and grand theatre - came to define what was quintessentially high baroque. Both were related in their search to create an art that would powerfully engage their audience; languages that still have a powerful meaningfulness today.
  • In-depth appreciation of the Italian baroque’s two founding fathers

Continue to the early 17th-century Palazzo Barberini, whose Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica houses Caravaggio’s Judith Beheading Holofernes as well as works by Raphael and contemporaries of Caravaggio and Bernini. Proceed to Bernini’s Triton Fountain in the Piazza Barberini before lunch.
