The Masterpieces of Dresden, Berlin & Potsdam

Renowned as the ‘Florence of the north’, Dresden’s 18th-century buildings have been faithfully restored to their former glory. The Old Masters Gallery is among the finest in Europe and the famous Green Vaults is Europe’s richest and most magnificent treasure chamber museum. Berlin is a veritable cultural treasure trove, with rich art collections ranging from ancient, medieval and Renaissance periods to the present day. Potsdam, part of the Unesco world cultural heritage, is home to the renowned Sanssouci Palace as well as many museums and monuments offering an insight into the town’s history.

Day 1 – To Dresden: Fly from London to Berlin with British Airways. Drive to Moritzburg to visit the Electors’ Hunting Lodge. This impressive baroque building, located within a lake, contains an interesting collection of period furniture from Saxony, 18th-century paintings and Meissen porcelain. Continue to Dresden and stay 3 nights at NH Hotel Altmarkt. Welcome dinner at a local restaurant. (D)

Day 2 – Dresden: Morning walking tour of the historical city before visiting the collection at the Old Masters Picture Gallery with major European works spanning the 15th to 18th centuries. After lunch, enjoy some free time to explore the Church of Our Lady, a baroque-style church with a unique sandstone dome, which was destroyed by British bombers during the second world war and subsequently rebuilt with meticulous precision. Continue to the Albertinum, home to Dresden’s collection of 19th-century paintings, where Caspar David Friedrich’s works are a highlight. (B)

Day 3 – Pillnitz & Dresden: Travel by boat from Dresden to Pillnitz Castle and Gardens. This summer palace is in the Chinese rococo style and contains a fine collection of decorative arts. This afternoon, visit Dresden Castle for a special visit to the Historic and New Green Vaults, which contain the largest collection of treasures in Europe, featuring exhibits from the baroque to the classicist era. Also see the Turkish Chamber, a dramatic display of Ottoman pieces dating back to 1591.

Day 4 – To Berlin: Drive to Meissen and visit the porcelain factory. This afternoon, visit the cathedral and castle, high up above the town before continuing to Berlin. Stay 4 nights at Hotel Angleterre. (B, D)

Day 5 – Berlin: This morning, drive to the Palace of Charlottenburg, city residence of the Prussian royal family, now containing a museum of 18th-century art. This afternoon, take a panoramic city tour to see Checkpoint Charlie, the Berlin wall, the Jewish Museum and the Berlin air lift memorial. (B)

Day 6 – Berlin: Spend a full day at Berlin’s renowned Museum Island with a visit to the Pergamon Museum, which includes monumental reconstructions of archaeological building ensembles – such as the Pergamon Altar, the Market Gate of Miletus and the Ishtar Gate. Continue to the New Museum housing notable Egyptian, prehistory and early history collections. After lunch, explore the range of sculptures, Byzantine art, coins and medals on display at the Bode Museum before a final visit to the Old National Gallery collection of neoclassical, romantic, biedermeier, impressionist and early Modernist artwork. Day 7 – Potsdam: Drive to Potsdam to visit the enchanting palace of Sanssouci, built for Frederick the Great’s personal use and set among glorious parkland. Continue to Cecilienhof, the exotic half-timbered manor house created in the style of an English stately mansion and built for German Crown Prince William in 1913. It was here that the 1945 Treaty of Potsdam was signed. Return to Berlin for afternoon tea at the renowned Käfer restaurant in the German Bundestag. Evening farewell dinner. (B, D)

Day 8 – To London: This morning, visit the Gemäldegalerie at the Kulturforum to see its unsurpassed collection of old masters, including works by Duhrer, Holbein, Rembrandt, Raphael and Caravaggio. Continue to the airport for your British Airways flight to London Heathrow. (B)
