The third largest of the Mediterranean islands, Cyprus offers nearly 500 miles of beautiful coastline, sandy beaches and a history dating back 10,000 years. In mythology, Aphrodite, the goddess of love, supposedly rose from the sea here, hence the name 'Aphrodite's Isle', whilst the ancient ruins and temples, ornate Byzantine churches all add to the island's natural charm.

What to see

Southern Cyprus, with its rich and varied history, attractive villages and spectacular scenery is just waiting to be explored. Visit Kolossi Castle and its ornate mosaics, whose origins date back to the Knights of St John  or the House of Dionysos and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Tomb of Kings.

The Troodos mountains, home to the Kykko Monastery, is the island’s largest monastery and contains a museum displaying a wealth of Byzantine and Ecclesiastical artefacts.

Before You Go:

Bitter Lemons of Cyprus

Lawrence Durrell (2000)
The story is a blend of the writer’s own personal new beginning on the island with an account of the lengthy animosities between the country’s Greek and Turkish populations.

A Watermelon, a Fish & a Bible

Christy Lefteri (2010)
It is July 1974 and on a bright, sunny morning, the Turkish army invade the village of Kyrenia in Cyprus. For many, this means an end to life as they know it, for others a chance to start living again.
