Bulgaria is located in Eastern Europe and borders five other countries - Romania, Serbia, the Republic of Macedonia, Greece and Turkey. The Balkan Mountains stretch across the country providing beautiful and rugged scenery, the Black Sea Coast offers mile upon mile of long, sandy beaches, whilst the many ancient cities have UNESCO-listed attractions. Bulgaria's largest settlement and capital city is Sofia.

What to see

The capital city of Sofia is a great first stop, here you can see the Church of St George, considered to be the oldest building in the city and St Nedelya, which has recently been restored as the cathedral for the Bishop of Sofia. Then there is the impressive 16th century Troyan Monastery, which includes the icon of the Three-Handed Virgin, one of the holiest icons for the Orthodoxy in Bulgaria.
