Fly to Barinas. Transfer through the savannas of Los Llanos to Hato El Cedral for 3 nights. These vast seasonally-flooded plains, stretching between the Andes and the Orinoco Delta, are home to abundant and varied wildlife.
Local guided excursions by vehicle or boat to spot capybara, caiman, giant anteater, armadillo, anaconda, pink dolphin and birdlife including ibis, heron and egret. (B, L, D)
Return to Barinas and fly to Maturin via Caracas. Transfer to Posada Rancho San Andres for an overnight stay. (B, D)
Transfer to Boca de Uracoa dock and continue by boat to the Orinoco Delta Lodge for 2 nights. The vast delta of Venezuela's mightiest river consists of numerous canals and islands and is a habitat for giant otter, howler and capuchin monkey, Orinoco dolphin, hummingbird, toucan and various other species. Take a boat trip and a jungle walk to explore the local flora and fauna, and visit Warao Indian communities to see their typical "palafito" dwellings. (B, L, D)
Return to Boca de Uracoa and transfer by road to the old port of Ciudad Bolivar. Short tour of the colonial centre and stay overnight at Posada Casa Grande. (B, D)
