Fly to Cuzco and transfer to the Sacred Valley visiting the Pisac market and the Awana Kancha breeding centre en route (1 hour, excluding sightseeing). See llamas, alpacas and vicuñas, learn about the different fibres produced by these animals and the ancient weaving techniques before taking a wander around the colourful indigenous market. Stay for 3 nights at the flower-filled Sol y Luna (Family casita). (B)
In the morning you will have a chance to climb over the Ollantaytambo fortress, where the Inca King Manco held the Spanish army at bay in 1535. Enjoy lunch on a traditional ranch and a traditional Peruvian Paso horse show. This morning you will have the chance to go mountain biking through beautiful scenery to the ancient Maras salt mine, used for salt extraction since the time of the Incas. Alternatively take a horseback ride or paddle on a kayak surrounded by snowy mountain peaks. Afternoon is at leisure. (B)
Today, board the Vistadome train to Aguas Calientes (journey time 1 hour 20 minutes) and take a tour of Machu Picchu, the 'Lost City of the Incas', one of the most impressive ancient sites in the world. It sits high in the Andes mountains, with forts and ancient temples hanging precariously over the steep valley. In the evening, return by train to Cuzco (journey time of 3 hours 20 mins) for 2 nights at the characterful El Mercado hotel (twin room). (B, L)
Half-day tour of Cuzco with its remarkable Incan walls and beautiful colonial architecture. A visit to the chocolate museum is also included to try your hands at making chocolate in a workshop. Optional evening visit to Cuzco's planetarium to learn how the Incas interpreted the southern skies. (B)
Fly to Puerto Maldonado. After a 40-minute drive, board a motorised canoe for the 3-hour boat ride to the wild forests of the Tambopata where you will stay for 3 nights at the Refugio Amazonas (Traditional room). Glimpse your first sightings of caimans, macaws and capybaras. Spend your days exploring the rainforest by boat, mountain bike, kayak or stand-up paddle board. Search for caimans, spot giant river otters and monkeys, and discover colourful butterflies and macaws. Climb the jungle canopy tower or help researchers collect insects and data from camera traps set at the nearby mammal clay lick. (B, L, D)

Refugio Amazonas is situated on a 200-hectare private reserve on the edge of the Tambopata National Reserve, two and a half hours by boat from Puerto Maldonado. The property is built from locally sourced materials that blend into the surroundings. There are 33 rustic and comfortable rooms, each designed with an open side, which acts as a large window and allows for close contact with the rainforest. Rooms are well ventilated and have curtains in place of doors. Each room has a private bathroom with hot water and in standard rooms the room and bathroom are separated by a curtain only. Additional facilities include mosquito nets and hammocks or lounge chairs.
The lodge does not have electricity and lighting is provided by kerosene lamps and candles. A generator is turned on once a day to recharge batteries for guests or lodge facilities. It is recommendable to bring a torch.
