Explore the remote far north of Chile on this off-the-beaten track itinerary. Travel to the coastal city of Arica and continue inland, high in to the Andes past ancient picturesque adobe villages. This is a region dotted with the remains of pre-Columbian cultures, where you will see mysterious rock paintings, ruined Incan fortresses and ancient mummies that pre-date their Egyptian counterparts by 2,000 years. Experience the beauty of the altiplano and visit the Lauca National Park and the emerald green Lake Chungara, overlooked by the snow-covered Parinacota volcano. Here, you may see alpacas, guanacos and flamingoes. Your journey will begin and end in the cosmopolitan capital, Santiago de Chile.
