Morning flight to Sucre, Bolivia's legislative capital, for a 3-night stay at Parador Santa Maria la Real. Afternoon at leisure to acclimatise. (B)

Visit the Sunday market at Tarabuco with its textiles and strolling charango players, or the village of Potolo to learn more about the indigenous communities and their distinctive weaving styles. (B, L)
Drive to Potosi, one of the highest cities in the world at nearly 4,100 metres, and take in the remarkable architectural heritage founded on the wealth of the silver mines. Continue across the Altiplano to Uyuni, which lies on the edge of the Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt lake. Stay 2 nights at Hotel Petite Porte or Jardines de Uyuni. For a supplement stay at one of the salt hotels overlooking the salt flats. (B, L, D)

It is possible to spend an overnight out on the salt flats in a retro-style caravan- supplements apply. Alternatively, head further south and explore the red Siloli desert to see the rock formations and on to the colourful and remote Laguna Verde and Laguna Colorada, and the Sol de Manana geysers. Accommodation is at a simple lodge.
Morning flight to La Paz and transfer (shared) to Lake Titicaca, via the Tiwanaku ruins. At Huatajata visit the Andean Roots eco-village to learn about the cultural heritage of the Aymaras and Incas and also meet the Limachi family, who helped build rafts for Thor Heyerdahl's Atlantic crossings. Hydrofoil cruise to visit the Uros-Iruitos floating reed islands and the Quewaya sustainable project. Continue to the Moon and Sun Islands to explore ancient ruins and meet the local community. Overnight on the Sun Island. (B, L, D)
