has been occupied by Phoenicians,
Romans and Arabs. Today, the country is home to some of
North Africa’s most impressive ruins,
including eight Unesco world heritage
sites. This tour visits many of the country’s
most renowned archaeological sites,
including the ancient city of Carthage,
the vast amphitheatre of El Djem, the
fascinating villas of Bulla Regia, and the
holy city of Kairouan.
Fly from London to Tunis with Tunisair. Transfer
to the El Mouradi Gammarth hotel (or similar)
for 3 nights. (D)
Morning visit to the Bardo Museum, which
contains a fine collection of artefacts spanning the
history of Tunisia. Continue to the medina and the
Zitouna mosque. Afternoon excursion to the Punic
and Roman ruins at Carthage and the picturesque
village of Sidi Bou Said, with its stunning location
overlooking the Gulf of Tunis. (B, D)
Morning drive to Bulla Regia to see its
underground Roman townhouses and some
excellent mosaics. Continue to Ain Tounga, with
its Byzantine fortress and Roman amphitheatre,
and Dougga, which is perhaps the bestpreserved
archaeological site in Tunisia. (B, D)
Morning drive to Kairouan, via the Roman ruins
at Thuburbu Majus to view the bath complexes,
Forum and several Temples. Afternoon tour of
Kairouan, a magnificent early Islamic religious
and cultural centre. Afternoon tour of the city,
including the Basins of Aghlabids, the Great Mosque, which is the oldest in North Africa, and
the Mosque of the Barber. Stay overnight at La
Kasbah. (B, D)
Drive to Sousse. Stop en route at Mahdia to
see its impressive 16th-century medina, and El
Djem, with its magnificent Unesco-listed Roman
amphitheatre and museum, which was built on
the remains of a Roman villa. Stay for 2 nights
at the Hasdrubal Port El Kantaoui Hotel. (B, D)
Morning walking tour of Sousse to view the
Great Mosque and the ribat (fortress). Drive to
Monastir to visit the Mausoleum of Bourguiba,
the father of modern Tunisia. (B, D)
Full-day tour of the Cap Bon peninsula,
including visits to Hammamet, Nabeul, the
picturesque village of Kelibia, Kerkouane with
its archaeological site and El Haouaria. Drive
to Gammarth and stay overnight at El Mouradi
