Under the watchful eye of local chefs, help to prepare a typical dinner in this relaxed setting. Enjoy a full day of discovery at the ancient city of Petra, built more than 2,000 years ago. The Arab Nabateans carved the monumental tombs, elaborate palaces, splendid temples and iconic treasury from the desert’s rose-coloured rock and sandstone. The walk through the 1,600-metre-long Siq to the treasury provides one of the most memorable moments in Middle East travel. Continue your visit to Petra and, if you are feeling energetic, climb the 800 steps to the imposing Monastery. This evening, take the opportunity to experience a real highlight on an optional return visit to the ancient city. Take a second, silent walk along the Siq, but this time only by the light from hundreds of candles. Sip on a glass of hot sweet tea accompanied by the hypnotic sound of traditional music and relax in the unique atmosphere. Dinner this evening is at Al Qantarah, a restaurant inspired by Jordanian heritage. Dine on traditional dishes cooked on a wood burning stove. (B, D)
This morning, follow in the footsteps of TE Lawrence into the unique desert landscape of Wadi Rum. Travelling by 4x4, visit the ‘Valley of the Moon’ with its splendid backdrop of sandstone and granite mountains. This area has been inhabited by many different settlers and the Bedouins still live here. Join them for a traditional sweet tea and a lunch cooked in a zarb. This method uses a wood burning barrel which is filled with meat and seasonal vegetables and then buried for several hours. This slow cooking delivers
succulent and tender results. After the Bedouin hospitality, return to Amman for a 2-night stay at the Amman International Hotel / Amman Marriott Hotel. The balance of the day is at leisure to explore the city further. You could take a taxi to the artistic community of Rainbow Street where plentiful restaurants and trendy cafes offer tempting menus. If you are feeling adventurous this is also a great spot to try traditional shisha. (B, L)
This morning, take the short drive to Madaba for a visit to the Greek Orthodox Church and the famous sixth century mosaic map of the Middle East. At lunchtime, join the Hikyat Sitti Women’s Cooperative and enjoy a cooking demonstration and lunch amid the surroundings of a renovated traditional house. Later, visit Mount Nebo from where it is said Moses first viewed the Holy Land. A brief stop will also be made to La Storia Museum which showcases the religious, historical and cultural heritage of Jordan. Spend your last evening in the authentic surroundings of Beit Sitti, an atmospheric restaurant located in one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Amman. Under the instruction of a traditional hajjeh (polite form of address for grandmothers), help prepare a four-course Arabic meal. Then enjoy what you have all prepared accompanied by stories of old Amman. (B, L, D)
