Early morning arrival and transfer to the Grand
Mir Hotel (or similar). Stay for 1 night. (N)
Full-day tour of Tashkent discovering architecture
from the 16th-century to the Soviet era. Evening
performance at the Tashkent Navoi Opera
(schedule dependent). Board the Orient Silk Road
Express train for the overnight journey. (B, L, D)
Tour of Samarkand including the necropolis of
Shah-e-zende, the excavation sites of Afrosiab
and the impressive display of central Asian
architecture in Registan Square. Overnight at
the Hotel Registan Plaza (or similar). (B, L, D)
Visit a silk carpet factory to see local artisans
at work. Further visits will be made to the
observatory of Ulug Beg, the ruins of the Bibi
Khanum mosque and the palace-like Gur Emir
mausoleum. Reboard the train for the overnight
journey to Bukhara. (B, L, D)
Morning arrival in Bukhara, located in the
middle of the Kyzyl Kum desert. Full-day city
tour, visiting numerous monuments dating back to the golden age of the Silk Road. Later, dine
in a madrasa’s courtyard, accompanied by local
music and dancing, before returning to the train
for the overnight journey to Merv. (B, L, D)
This morning the train arrives in Merv, once an
oasis city on the Silk Road. View the gigantic
walls, ancient ramparts and magnificent ruins
of this Unesco world heritage site in the
middle of the desert. Arrive late evening in
Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, and
stay at the Hotel Ak Altyn (or similar) for
2 nights. (B, L, D)
Morning tour to the Unesco-listed ruins of
the ancient city of Nisa. After lunch, return
to Ashgabat for a city tour and a visit to the
National Museum to view artefacts excavated
from the ruins at Nisa. (B, L, D)
fter breakfast, travel by coach to Mashhad in
Iran. Visit the Imam Reza holy shrine, the largest
mosque in the world in terms of its dimensions.
Transfer to the Hotel Homa (or similar) for
1 night. (B, L, D)
At noon, board the Persian Explorer and depart
for Yazd. Overnight on board the train. (B, L, D)
Morning arrival in the city of Yazd, founded by
Alexander the Great. Visit the Zoroastrian fire
temples and Towers of Silence before learning
about the Qanat water transportation system at
the Water Museum. Reboard the train to travel
to Isfahan. Transfer to the Hotel Kowsar (or
similar) for 2 nights. (B, L, D)
Two full days to explore the Unesco-listed Imam
Square, Lotfollah and Jameh mosques, the
Armenian quarter and the markets where you
can watch local artisans at work. Finish the two
days with dinner in a restaurant serving local
dishes and a visit to a typical zurkhaneh, a local
sporting arena. Second night on board the train
as it travels towards Shiraz. (B, L, D)
Arrive in Shiraz, where you will visit the
Unesco-listed Persian Paradise gardens,
the Old Town bazaar and Nasir-al-Molk mosque
with its beautiful winter prayer hall. Bud-shaped
dome structures are typical in Shiraz and the
Shah Cheragh monument and mosque is one of the best examples of this style.
Overnight at the Chamran Grand Hotel (or

Full-day visit to Cyrus the Great’s capital city of
Pasargadae where your local guide will show you
the attractions of this extensive archaeological
site, including Cyrus’ grave. Continue to
Persepolis and explore the Grand Palace before
returning to the train for your overnight journey
to Tehran. (B, L, D)
Morning arrival in the Iranian capital. Visit
Golestan Palace, the Archaeological Museum
and marvel at one of the most outstanding gem
collections in the world including the exquisite
Naderi Throne. Overnight at the Hotel Laleh (or
similar). (B, L, D)
Transfer to the airport for your flight home. (N)
